I also read that all Armory and contractor rebuilds outside of the U.S. were not allowed to use rebuild marks. So, theoretically, any number of M1's could be rebuilt with no historical markings.

That serial number was probably made late 1943, I doubt it came from the factory with a milled adjustable rear sight. The stake marks are evidence of an adjustable rear sight being installed, but that would have been later. There may (or may not) be other clues on the carbine as to whether it went through a rebuild.
