Finally managed to get my grubby little hands on an authentic Winchester '97 trench gun. US marked with flaming bomb, notches on the underside of the muzzle end for the bayo lug. The buttstock is a replacement, which will be replaced. No finish left. Looks like it was made in 1948, from the research I've done. Even better, this shotgun is really tight.
Admittedly, the lack of a vent rib on the 97 presents a bit of a challange during a 100 bird shoot on a hot summer day as the heat waves coming off the plain barrel tend to blur the target. IMO, Winchester gave the Model 97 and Model 12 full chokes which are equal or superior to those of many current high end and costly dedicated trap guns.
