The untended graves is the shrine from ds3 but in the present time of the game. At least that is how i see it. Afaik the untended graves are the past and not present. If you first talk to the shrine handmaiden in the untended graves before the one in the firelink shrine her new dialogue suggests shes already seen you before.

I think since my last visit I killed the belltower gargoyles, the demon by the blacksmith, the moonlight butterfly and explored all of the forest, and undead burg. He has grown weary of the world and fears his hollowing is inevitable. When engaging in conversation with him, he will reveal useful information about the world and your objectives.
