At first my auto crafter was taking algae and water from a lake water collector. It was making bacteria samples without any interaction. Later I came back to it and it had stopped. For the auto-crafter, I extended a 2x2 building out over the lake , and then placed the algae generator and 2 water collectors in the water under the 2x2. The auto-crafter sees all of the algae and water, and creates bacteria automatically. I have the drones move the bacteria to storage. Looking back, I'm happy I jammed my base into a small 3 floor area, plugged the auto crafter into the center of my ground level and it was able to pull anything. You can see a list of the storages that it can access, it's something like 50 yds range. A lot of the things you can craft are needed by other crafts, and you can literally craft all items in 1 place with ~20 auto-crafters.
