Mage is useless in F7 without Hyperion. The whole point of mage is to clear rooms fast, and spirit sceptre Nons will clear a room 10x slower than a hype mage. They also do 10x less average damage. Honestly, mage isn't great in f7 (especially as cata 30) w/o hyperion. I played bers until about cata 32 then switched to mage when I could afford a hyperion. I assume you're having trouble finding decent parties as a mage w/o hyperion whereas archer with bones (or even melee tank/bers/healer) might still get you into parties.
