Hello, I have just been given this model 38 airweight by my grandpa as a birthday gift. He told me he bought it new in box roughly 15-20 yrs ago. I would like to know if anyone can offer some assistance on dating this gun because I do not have much knowledge of the S&W brand. Serial number from the bottom of the handle is 929XXX.

Dolf, the number you are looking at is NOT the serial number, it's the factory assembly number, used to keep the major parts of the revolver together for final fitting. The correct serial number will be stamped on the butt of the revolver. You will have to remove the stocks to see it.
