The aftmost ones are easier, because the planking is nearly perpendicular to the frames, but the first few in the front are much trickier because the bow is converging and there is a significant bevel that must be cut in the frames.

The Penn 309 used to be the standard for bay trolling. Most guys used 30 lb mono in spring / summer - then put on 30lb Monel for late fall / winter. It's a good reel for spring - I'd stick with lighter lures - up to say 10 ozs. Not sure it will handle big umbrellas.

If the lead breaks - you lose the fish. Pure lead is also more dense then alloy. You would be amazed if you took a small scale and weighed various 8 oz sinkers. Ones made with alloy might only go 6 ozs. Now make a 2.5 to 3 foot leader using the 60 lb test with a swivel at one end and a snap swivel at the other. Attach a lure to the snap swivel. Finally attach the swivel on the leader to the center snap swivel on the umbrella. Now take it fishing!
Primer Ball Not Getting Hard – Follow-up. The problem was a bad primer ball. As soon as I replaced the ball, the new one functioned perfectly.
